MathWorks introduced Release 2017b (R2017b), which includes new features in MATLAB and Simulink, six new products, and updates and bug fixes to 86 other products. The release also adds new important deep learning capabilities that simplify how engineers, researchers, and other domain experts design, train, and deploy models.MATLAB is a high-performance language for technical computing. It integrates computation, visualization, and programming in an easy-to-use environment where problems and solutions are expressed in familiar mathematical notation. Typical uses include:– Math and computation– Algorithm development– Modeling, simulation, and prototyping– Data analysis, exploration, and visualization– Scientific and engineering graphics– Application development, including Graphical User Interface buildingMATLAB is an interactive system whose basic data element is an array that does not require dimensioning. This allows you to solve many technical computing problems, especially those with matrix and vector formulations, in a fraction of the time it would take to write a program in a scalar noninteractive language such as C or Fortran. The name MATLAB stands for matrix laboratory. MATLAB was originally written to provide easy access to matrix software developed by the LINPACK and EISPACK projects, which together represent the state-of-the-art in software for matrix computation.MATLAB has evolved over a period of years with input from many users. In university environments, it is the standard instructional tool for introductory and advanced courses in mathematics, engineering, and science. In industry, MATLAB is the tool of choice for high-productivity research, development, and analysis.MATLAB features a family of application-specific solutions called toolboxes.

Version

Very important to most users of MATLAB, toolboxes allow you to learn and apply specialized technology. Toolboxes are comprehensive collections of MATLAB functions (M-files) that extend the MATLAB environment to solve particular classes of problems.

Examples

I am running successfully MATLAB 7.6, r2008a, standalone version from 2010 on WIN XP(32 bit) and WIN 7 (64 bit) machines. My r2008a MATLAB software runs in remote areas (e.g. Concordia Station, Antarctica) without any access to the web (so, no possible upgrades either of MATLAB or WINdows). From apparently, the MATLAB license EXPIRED, with no way to resume it, even registering it using other licenses. The same problem occurred the same day to another r2008a MATLAB running on my PC in Italy, and also on other PCs of research mates in my same Institute. I discovered that setting the PC date back just a year allows MATLAB to start regularly.

Once started MATLAB with the old date, I can set back the date to the actual one without inconveniences. For our remote instruments running MATLAB r2008a this is a mess, as we cannot play with the date every day or PC startup. Is there any '2017' bug in that MATLAB version? Dico 900 software. In such a case how could we fix it? Since you are doing professional work in Antarctica, you most likely have a legally purchased copy of MATLAB and legal license. Whether the Mathworks, back in 2008 put in some kind of hard-coded license limitation of nine and a half years into that software, I don't know.

It sounds like you expected to have a perpetual (time unlimited) license. Your best bet is to simply call the Mathworks on the telephone and ask them. Better yet, just upgrade and get ten years of improvements! There have been a lot of them in that time.
