Should have bought earlierI purchased this ipod to finally scratch the itch I have been having ever since I upgraded the sound system on my truck. I wanted to be able to listen to any / all of my music at all times and the only way to do this effectively was to get myself this little bugger and connect it to my stereo / dvd player. Why did apple ever stop making these? I will never know. Why didnt I buy one when they first came out? Lack of foresight. Nevertheless, the device is in good shape.
The screen is vibrant and after formatting the hard drive (which I wholly recommend, even if you are using itunes to re-initialize the whole device later, everything is working fine. Sound through my vehicle speakers is great, and if later on I want to watch podcast videos, or any other content I so chose, Ill buy the video cable and replace the one i got now. I recommend this nugget to anyone who doesnt want to deal with cloud storage or blowing thru your data cap just listening to music. As an added bonus, you can show your photos on your car display screen from the ipod as well. Wireless bluetooth would have been the icing on the cake but that was too much to ask from apple then. As with all their devices, Apple future-proofs their market by making things obsolete with each generation. Control will never be obsolete in my book, however, and this device gives total control to a true music lover in spades.
Functional, but disappointing. So I bought this used iPod knowing I might encounter some issues I wouldn't have if I'd just sprung and bought a brand new one, but I find some issues I'm encountering surprising. The light wear and tear/paint chips are completely negligible and acceptable, but the decent scratch across the screen that I don't think was mentioned in the description was a bummer. Good for on the go simplicity.Great interface and storage are the saviors of this media player. Unfortunately, it doesn't support any bit rate above 320 kbps, so anyone with higher quality audio (i.e. FLAC, OGG Vorbis) will need to compress their files in order to sync them. Also, the battery life is nothing to write home about.Aside from that, it's super easy to use, and is compatible with almost everything these days. It's got great storage space, though removable storage would make things much better for those with large libraries.
Everything I expectedI finally took the plunge to purchase an iPod Classic 160GB model after years of putting it off. I've had a good deal of mp3 players (especially grey market or international models) so there were features I had grown accustomed to that had me hesitating. I wanted large capacity.
I like to have all my music (or most of it) wherever I go. I wanted a simple interface. Decent sound is important but the music I listen to isn't 'designed' for the most pleasant of auditory experiences. The iPod has all of these features. It's exactly what I need. Not exactly what I want but that's life.
What could make it better? For one, it should act exactly like a hard drive. 160GB in my pocket should be more useful than just a music player which also digresses into another possible feature: the ability to upgrade the drive itself. I knew this ahead of time when I purchased the player but it's a point that needs to be made. Proprietary formats/designs only hinder customers. Apple, for all that it has done to make computing 'easier' for mass market consumers, continues to try and control the way they use their products.
Another point on that, music organization on the iPod and in iTunes is definitely not as flexible as I'd like. I'm a nerd when it comes to my mp3s. I want them organized in such a manner that there is a minimal amount of folders with the maximum amount of organization. Creating a folder for every single artist (regardless of how many songs of theirs I have) only makes for lengthy searches through the menu. I'm happy with the way the iPod performs according to Apple's design.

There's nothing here that says poor manufacturing or hurried design. I just know that it could be better. Big improvements from previous generations.I recently purchased the Apple iPOd classic 7th Gen. (160GB) as an upgrade from my iPod classic 5th Gen.
Since I was running out of space for my music library. In addition to that I really liked the frosted metal front part compared to the glossy one from the 5th generation. What I really like about this iPod is the integration of the Genius to its software. When you deal with music libraries of 20,000 songs sometimes it could be hard to sit down and develop different playlist.
In addition to the default function of the Genius on itunes in you computer, the genius within the iPod's software develops the so-called 'Genius Mixes' which are nothing more than similar types of songs group as a 'playlist'. A down side of it is the limitation of genius mixes developed by the iPod, which doesn't go over 10. I also enjoy the quality of the display and the smoothness of the 'slideshow' in the background when browsing through the menu. The EQ settings in this iPod are actually very good and more accurate to what one is looking for when listening to different kinds of music.
Also, the thinness of the device is perfect, way smaller than my 5th gen. There is only one thing I dislike about this newest model, and that is the responsiveness of the click wheel. Perhaps it is because my device is still pretty new, but the click wheel has this slightly frosted texture to it that sometimes it will not recognize the touch of the tip of the finger when browsing through any of the menus. From time to time the iPod will not recognize the finger circling it, or will be 'jumpy' detecting in bits. To overcome this you have to place basically your whole thumb over the click wheel and rotate it.But, overall I really enjoy the capacitiy of this iPod, its size and quality components. If you want to have your entire music library with you at all times in a truly pocket-size HDD mP3, this is for you.
